Workshop 1 - Industry 4.0: From shop floor to networks of enterprises (I40SFLNOE)


Connecting and integrating systems, machines, people and other means of production involved in value creation is a key to designing efficient and competitive business and production processes. Result needs to be a value network, knitted horizontally along the value chain and vertically across all enterprise architecture levels.
This network provides a flexible infrastructure of distributed human cyber-physical systems that allow for digital transformation of existing and creation of new business models.
Following the network notion, the workshop at hand aims for bridging business, IT and engineering domains and communities in order to present and discuss interdisciplinary approaches to digitalization. Such approaches may include the description and implementation of the behavior of human-cyber-physical systems in various Industry 4.0/Internet of Things scenarios as well as concepts for specifying architectures of enterprise networks and systems.
Against this background, we invite researchers and practitioners from diverse communities like mechanical engineering, information science and business management to present and share their perspective of the aforementioned context. 

Topics of Interest 

The topics of interest for paper solicitation, include, but are not limited to:

  • Description concepts for networks of heterogeneous agent types (human, machines and software)
  • Agent behavior specification in a network of agents
  • Modeling networks of enterprises - business and technology view
  • Agility in cross-enterprise value networks - business and technology view
  • Adding entities to a network of entities
  • Specification concepts for networked production and business processes
  • Software engineering for distributed system architectures (shared memory, shared nothing, …)
  • Industry 4.0 and Edge/Fog/Cloud computing
  • Cyber-physical-production-systems especially in combination with a process/business perspective
  • Safety and Security in distributed/decentralized production systems - business and technology view 
  • Information modelling incl. semantic modelling

Formats and types

Submissions are possible in the following format:

  1. Full Paper: These contributions present a completed research project or a scientifically examined case. They shold follow ACM format and be of 10 to 15 pages length. Full papers are evaluated in a detailed peer review in terms of quality, foundations, study design and impact.
  2. Short Paper: These contributions should have 4 to 6 pages (ACM format) and are evaluated in a fast track review by the Organization Committee. In what form the contribution should be presented at the conference (e.g., presentation, poster or discussion) should be indicated in the text. Contributions are evaluated primarily according to their potential to stimulate expert discussions on known or innovative topics. (a.) Work in Progress: Ongoing research or planned research contributions with initial results, as well as case studies or business applications without in-depth scientific underpinning. (b.) Reflection Papers: Discussions or opinions on current scientific or practical questions that are to be further substantiated or presented as a thesis at the congress. (c.) Demonstration/Showcases: Presentation of applications, case studies or prototypes. (d.) Doctoral/master studies: Research projects, ongoing studies or completed work of master and doctoral students. (e.) Panels: Discussions with invited guests or open for contribution. (f.) Tutorials: Guidance or practical guidelines from science and practice.

  • 10.05. Notification of acceptance - Reviews available
  • 24.05. Camera-ready versions

All submissions will undergo blind peer reviews of at least two members of the workshop program committee.

Accepted full papers will be published in the ACM Digital Library. The short paper contributions will be published online at CEUR-WS.org (authors retain the sole copyright on their contributions in this case). All accepted contributions (full and short papers) will be included in printed proceedings volumes.
